We watch cooks on TV - whether it's amateur cooks on Masterchef or Michelin-starred chefs on Saturday Kitchen - creating beautiful, modern recipes; but these dishes often seem rather time-consuming and difficult to follow. For this beautiful new book Sophie Michell, who has worked as a chef to numerous celebrities and is well known from her TV appearances, has created recipes that look and taste just as wonderful as these butare all very do-able. Whether you're already an experienced cook or someone with very little experience in the kitchen, you'll find these contemporary dishes irrestistible. The recipes are divided into chapters for light meals, main meals, desserts and baked treats. Encompassing dishes that are visually stunning (including gorgeous microherbs, shoots and edible flowers), international, full of different flavours and aromas, healthy, and based on great ingredients, Sophie shows you how to achieve memorable meals without spending hours in the kitchen.

Here is a book that stands head and shoulders above many other cookbooks in a very crowded sector! Chef Sophie Michell presents a range of contemporary, appealing restaurant-quality recipes that are relatively easy to make yet they do not require a five-star restaurant kitchen or kitchen brigade to boot.Achievable, credible recipes and food for the regular person who wants something more than microwaveable food, you could say. This is a fairly open, breezy book that does not get caught up with its own air of pretension. There is a fairly lengthy, yet interesting introduction, that helps explain what makes Sophie Michell tick and her approach to cooking. Although on a personal level seeing pictures of the chef (or guests) sticking food into their mouth does not appeal to this reviewer!
The recipes cannot be shoe-horned into a specific style, group or cuisine type - they are just split into light meals; main meals; desserts; baking and basics. You just need to dive in and browse. The selection can range from a sort of comfortable known variable, possibly with a twist, such as Pea Shoot & Watercress Soup and then go to the more diverse, bleeding-edge of Pea Shoot Pancakes with Crispy Pancetta & Sweet Chilli Sauce. Most recipes have their own full-page colour photograph of the finished article, tastefully laid out in a serving suggestion-style but they are not arty for arty's sake. In many ways the recipes feel that they are presented in a lazy, informal manner yet they do feature all the critical information you need. They even feature a typical preparation and cooking time too! Regular YUM readers will understand why we emphasise this...
This is a great, fresh book that cannot fail to please. This could be one of the year's best general recipe books on a number of different levels: its accessibility, its range of dishes, its encouragement for the 'average person' to try something possibly less familiar... yet the book presents this in a very matter-of-fact way, almost downplayed. Not so much pretension but practical possibilities for all. Many of these dishes could be slipped in at a top restaurant with a fancier name and price to boot and nobody would bat an eyelid... yet you can have these in the comfort of your own kitchen, made from your own fair hands. Yes, it is achievable, it is doable, so just do it...
You are going to find dozens of recipes here that will catch your eye. This book is going to sell and no doubt there will be the inevitable price war between the online retailers (at the time of writing, one major retailer has this book available for pre-orders at less than half the recommended price). The publishers could have doubled this price and still this book would be a gem.
So dear Sophie... how are you going to top this book. We are already waiting...

By Sophie Michell, published by Duncan Bard, ISBN 978184899104
It takes a lot more money, time, and coordination than I have to cook like Sophie Michell. But it's undoubtedly worth doing if you can.
The pictures in this cookbook are enough to make you drool, and if you're male the picture of the chef may have the same effect. But most of her beauty comes from nature. Come to think of it, so does most of the beauty of her food. Many of the ingredients come from nature, including things I would never have thought to eat such as pea shoots--not the kind you make in your kitchen in a jar, but the snippings from the end of pea branches early in the spring. Raw beets, samphire, courgettes, mini-veggies, and other unusual foods and common ones used uncommonly make up her vegetable and fruit repertoire--she particularly likes pomegranate, a weakness I share with her--and she includes meats, cheeses, and seafoods that, if I have heard of, I have certainly never seen.
According to the publisher, she is "one of the most glamorous and talented young chefs currently on UK television." She has worked as a private chef and as a caterer, besides cooking for top restaurants in London. She has written several cookbooks and creates columns for three magazines. With all this activity, she manages to make her recipes easy and fast compared to most haut cuisine.
The recipes in this book are, for the most part, low-fat and low-calorie despite being delicious and attractive. This is a goal she strives for in all the recipes she creates. One of her major goals is to make food as healthful as it is attractive.
Read this book for yourself and judge how well she has succeeded. I give her five stars.
